These 4 Additives Can Make Your Beer Better

By on Jul 2nd 2018

If you’ve ever wondered what additives are used in beer, you’re in for a treat. Here at Ingredi, we sell additives for beer that will work to increase its quality, freshness, and longevity. But what are these products and how do they help improve your beer?

Additives in beer provide flavor and freshness

The main ingredients in beer are water, hops, grain (typically barley), and yeast. But the additives used in beer work to preserve its freshness and are an important part of the beer ingredients list. It’s important to know that additives aren’t a bad thing—without them, the shelf-life and flavor of our favorite beers just wouldn’t live up to the demand of today’s market. Some of the additives used to make beer aren’t necessarily in the final product but are used throughout the process in making the final product.

So, what’s with these beer additives? Let’s dive into them.

Better Yeast

Calcium chloride is often used to boost the calcium levels in beer. It’s important for beer to hold proper calcium levels for  increased extract yield, better yeast and flocculation growth, reduced color, and a number of other benefits.

Naturally found in fruits

This additive is a great addition to sour beers and is often combined with citrus acid for just this purpose. Malic acid is naturally found in fruits, giving raspberries and tart cherries their sour flavor. If you’re looking for a little something to bump up the tartness of your beer, this additive is just the ingredient!

Pale Ale & IPA Enhancer

Calcium sulfate is an ingredient often used to improve the calcium levels in beer. It’s great for use in pale ales and Indian pale ales because it produces a more bitter and dry flavor. It helps provide a smoother taste and also increases the shelf-life of beer.

Soda Ash

This beer additive works as an absorbent and flavor carrier. Stouts and porters benefit from higher levels of calcium carbonate—also called soda ash—in the brewing water, creating the signature smooth taste.
