5 National Food and Beverage Holidays to Celebrate this May

By on Apr 30th 2025

Make this May extra merry by indulging in a few delicious days of celebration! Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or just love a good excuse to treat yourself, these five national food holidays offer a perfect reason to savor the little things. From sweet treats to rich breads and a glass of wine, here are the tasty dates we’ve marked on our calendar this month:

May 2nd – National Chocolate Truffle Day

Satisfy your sweet tooth on May 2nd with a delectable chocolate creation that signifies luxury and decadence. Crafted by expert chocolatiers with care and creativity, chocolate truffles come in a wide variety of flavors and textures.

An exciting way to celebrate this national holiday is with a delicious game of chocolate roulette! Grab an assorted box of chocolate truffles and see if you can guess each truffle’s filling before biting in. This game is the perfect blend of mystery and indulgence.

Speaking of the perfect blend, how do confectioners create that unique consistency in the center of the truffle? That notorious silky-smooth center of a chocolate truffle owes its texture to an ingredient called soy lecithin. This additive is a key emulsifier that brings harmony between oil-based and water-based ingredients, resulting in that signature creamy consistency.

May 4th - National Orange Juice Day

Every year, May 4th is dedicated to one of the most delicious and nutritious juices on the market. Orange juice has become one of the most popular fruit juices in America, making an appearance on millions of breakfast tables each morning. To celebrate this national holiday, start your day by enjoying a cold glass of OJ.

Orange juice is rich in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that supports immune health and the formation of blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and collagen. When labels on the juice claim to have “100% Daily Value” of vitamin C, it means that extra ascorbic acid was added to the process to boost the vitamin levels. Thanks to a little help from ascorbic acid, your OJ is basically a delicious delivery system for superhero-level vitamin C.

May 23rd - National Taffy Day

This day honors the infamous boardwalk souvenir—saltwater taffy. This mouthwatering confection was invented back in 1883 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. National Taffy Day comes just a few days prior to the official kick-off to the summer season.

Observe this holiday by binging on some sweet and chewy pieces of taffy! With an insanely wide selection of bright colors and delicious flavors, what kind of taffy would you choose?

Since the taffy is so sticky and stretchy, how can the confectioners cut them into those little bite-sized pieces and prevent them from fusing into a big glob? While it may sound like a bit of a sticky situation, there’s a simple solution to prevent this mess. Dusting a thin coat of confectioner’s sugar onto the taffy will keep it from clinging to other pieces, packaging, and cutters.

May 25th - National Wine Day

Raise your glass to National Wine Day! Whether you're a red, white, or rosé lover, May 25th is your cue to sip, swirl, and savor your favorite vintage. Pair it with a meal, toast with friends, or just enjoy a glass to unwind at the end of the day. However you choose to celebrate, remember to drink responsibly.

Here’s a little winemaking wisdom: potassium bicarbonate is a common additive used in wine production to balance acidity. It reacts with the grape’s natural acids to reduce tartness and improve flavor before bottling, ensuring every glass tastes just right.

May 31st - National Macaroon Day

Calling all coconut connoisseurs! Wrap up the month on a sweet and chewy note with National Macaroon Day! These dense, golden coconut cookies are a treat for coconut lovers everywhere.

Be careful not to confuse these with French macarons (even though they ARE cookie cousins), because macaroons bring an entirely different flavor profile to the table.

Dating back to the 9th century, bakeries originally added coconut shavings to these cookies to help preserve them to last over long shipping journeys. Preservatives have come a long way since the 9th century, though. Today, bakeries use ingredients like sodium benzoate to keep these delicious snacks tasting the same as the day they came out of the oven! Utilizing modern additives reduces food waste and preserves taste!
